A woman invented by Rosa Montero leaves the pages of La carne to face the public at Gran Teatro Pavón. Her name is Josefina Aznárez and her story crosses the desire for freedom, the contradictions of her era and a tragedy that will change her fate forever.
The character created by Montero belongs to that kind of literary figure whose life seems to continue even after the book is closed. Josefina is a nineteenth-century woman who resists fitting into the role assigned to her and whose existence moves between historical reality and fiction.
On 3 November 1893, the explosion of the steamship Cabo Machichaco marks a before and after in her story. Laila Ripoll takes this episode as the starting point for a monologue in which Josefina’s memories, losses and different identities intertwine until she becomes a figure difficult to separate from myth.
El caballero incierto thus recovers a protagonist who could share a universe with women such as Hildegarda de Bingen, María Lejárraga or George Sand. On stage, Josefina speaks again to reconstruct her past and confront what for so long threatened to erase her.
