From 5 to 7 February, the Sala Roja at Teatro del Canal de Madrid will host the premiere of a new work by South African choreographer Gregory Makoma. Inspired by the novels of Zakes Mda, the work tells the story of Toloki, a professional mourner who moves between life and death, accompanying those who suffer.
On stage, the cemetery becomes a symbolic space for reflecting on power, violence and collective loss. The dancers’ movement, the music and the ritual energy create a contemporary requiem, in which the famous Ravel’s Boléro intertwines with traditional South African a cappella singing, forming a dialogue between past and present, Africa and Europe.
