In San Lorenzo de El Escorial, the 19th-century square of Bizet's «Carmen» will become a social-media feed: the opera's protagonist will be judged not by her neighbours, but by her followers in real time.

On 12 September, Teatro Auditorio San Lorenzo de El Escorial will host «@Carmen, the reel story», a semi-staged version of Georges Bizet's opera, whose action is transferred to the world of social media. The work will feature the Orquesta y el Coro de la Comunidad de Madrid and Gaëlle Arquez. Musical direction will be by Alondra de la Parra, while stage direction will be by Bárbara Lluch.
In this version, the familiar story unfolds under the constant gaze of a digital community that follows the characters, comments on what happens and delivers its verdicts in real time. The 19th-century square is transformed into a virtual setting where private life becomes a spectacle and desire, identity and power are subject to the judgement of others.
The work is a joint project by the PAAX GNP festival, BRAVA Performing Arts and Fundación ORCAM. The production presents Carmen not only as a 19th-century heroine, but also as a symbol of independence and resistance against any form of control.
