«Canal Baila» performance series

From 3 September, Teatros del Canal will open Madrid's new dance season, in which Spanish dance, contemporary choreography and flamenco will coexist. The eleven productions in the «Canal Baila» series have emerged from the creative residencies of the Centro Coreográfico Canal and will be presented to the public for the first time.

The season will open on 3 and 4 September with «Bailar», by Brazilian choreographer Gabriel Matías, which explores the path towards flamenco from the perspective of a Brazilian artist based in Spain. Next, on 8 and 9 September, Paloma Díaz will present «Estoy enfadada, estoy rabiosa», a work about the loss of home, memory and identity. On 12 and 13 September, José Maldonado will present «Guacamayo», where dance merges with live music, singing and painting.

September will continue with «Eclipse», by the German company Yibu (17 and 18 September), where the Thai martial art krabi krabong becomes contemporary choreography; «RÆM. las aguas mentales», by Javier Martín (22 and 23 September), and «Líquido infinito», by Carmen Fumero (26 and 27 September), a work about the space between bodies.

In October, the programme will continue with «Enjambre Rave», by Elías Aguirre (3 and 4 October), a work based on dialogue with electronic music. On 10 and 11 October, the Mexican company Cuatro X Cuatro and Shantí Vera will present «La razón sensible», with the support of Fundación Casa de México en España, and on 29 and 30 October, the duo BeqVeg will present «moNo nO aWare (NOW)», a reflection on the fragility of the structures that sustain existence and transience.

November's programme will begin with «Antes del alba», by José Ángel Capel (3 and 4 November), an exploration of the origins of song in Spanish popular tradition. «Canal Baila» will conclude on 3 and 4 December with performances of «Coro de estancias x Ana Almagro», where contemporary flamenco merges with choral singing and flamenco singing.
