Changing of the Guard at the Royal Palace

Every Wednesday and Saturday, foot and mounted guards, in full-dress uniforms reminiscent of the army of Alfonso XIII’s era, perform the changing-of-the-guard ritual every 30 minutes to the sound of drum and bugle.

Particularly impressive is the solemn changing of the guard, which takes place on the first Wednesday of each month (except in January, August and September) and lasts around 50 minutes. Spectators see the parade of the outgoing and incoming guard, the changeover at artillery and watch posts, as well as the marches of lancers, halberdiers and soldiers with weapons and ammunition, immersing themselves in the atmosphere of a centuries-old palace.

The finishing touch is a mini-concert by the Unidad Musical on the terrace of the Puerta de los Príncipes. Admission to all events is free, provided that they do not coincide with official acts and weather conditions permit.
