“Agua, azucarillos y aguardiente” show
A new season of open-air zarzuela revives Madrid at its most traditional from 30 July to 3 August 2025, with live music and access for all audiences.

Compañía Clásicos de la Lírica and DRAO Producciones once again bring a gem of the género chico to the stage at Plaza de la Cebada: “Agua, azucarillos y aguardiente”. This Madrid classic will be performed from 30 July to 3 August 2025 as part of the “Zarzuela en La Latina” series, with performances Wednesday to Sunday at 20:00 and a live orchestra of more than 20 musicians.
The work, approximately 105 minutes long without an interval, is set within the popular celebrations of San Cayetano, San Lorenzo and Virgen de la Paloma. It intertwines stories of romantic entanglements, neighbourhood gossip and plenty of festival merriment, with such unforgettable characters as Asia, Doña Simona, Pepa and Serafín. All is set in early-20th-century Madrid, where Manila shawls, kiosks and strolls along Recoletos form part of the natural scenery.
Teatro La Latina presents this zarzuela alongside three other major productions that tour the capital’s most iconic corners and customs: “La del manojo de rosas”, “Doña Francisquita” and “El barberillo de Lavapiés”.
