Opera “Tierra Salvaje”
Revenge, a love triangle and a bloody enmity that extends over two generations: the Gran Teatro CaixaBank Príncipe Pío will present “Tierra Salvaje”, a Chinese opera in which Puccini’s verismo merges with traditional percussion.

On 1 and 2 September, the Gran Teatro CaixaBank Príncipe Pío will host “Tierra Salvaje”, a Chinese opera premiered in Beijing in 1987 which has since become a notable work of Chinese opera. The work is performed in Chinese with Spanish subtitles, and the music is by Jin Xiang, who has combined Puccini-style verismo lyricism with traditional Chinese percussion.
The action takes place in a Chinese village around a hundred years ago. The protagonist, Chou Hu, is obsessed with avenging the death of his family: after eight years in prison, he escapes and returns home to take revenge on the landowner who ruined his life. But his enemy has already died, and the woman Chou Hu has loved all his life, Jinzi, is now married to his son.
Jinzi lives in an unhappy marriage under the iron control of her mother-in-law, blinded by her own pain and relentless towards everyone around her. Chou Hu’s return awakens old feelings, and the protagonists become embroiled in a love triangle marked by an old bloody enmity.
The story moves towards a tragic ending: a murder, the accidental death of a child and a desperate flight into the forest. At dawn, Chou Hu is surrounded, but before dying he manages to save Jinzi and the child they are expecting, in the hope that their love will continue in the next generation.
