From 4 to 27 September, the Guirau stage at Fernán Gómez Centro Cultural de la Villa will open the new season with a play by Els Joglars, Europe's longest-running active private theatre company. The production commemorates the company's 65-year history and its 42 produced shows, and is directed by its founder, Albert Boadella. The play is an adaptation of a Cervantes classic.
The premise is simple: despite technological progress, human nature has barely changed since Cervantes's time. According to Boadella, science has profoundly transformed society, but not the basic patterns of behaviour. People are still driven by fear, ambition and the need to belong to a group. It is precisely this idea that the director brings into the age of artificial intelligence and social media, questioning the sense of superiority with which modern man looks at the past.
The story of swindlers who deceived an entire town becomes a satire of the utmost relevance today. Behind the deception lies the fear of being excluded from the collective, capable of turning a shared lie into an instrument of control.
