On 3 September, the Teatro Real in Madrid will host a concert by the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra, an event held to mark the festival’s 150th anniversary and taking place one day before the opening of the theatre’s new season. Pablo Heras-Casado will lead the orchestra, with Catherine Foster, Klaus Florian Vogt and Nicholas Brownlee appearing as soloists. The programme includes selected scenes from Wagner’s tetralogy “The Ring of the Nibelung”.
The orchestra was founded by Richard Wagner himself in 1876, specifically to perform his music dramas in the Festspielhaus pit, a hall whose unusual construction makes it possible to balance the sound of the instruments and focus the audience’s attention on the stage. Since then, the ensemble has been considered one of the most recognisable and singular in the European operatic tradition.
