Plantada and display of giant and giantess dances
On the morning of La Mercè, the main characters stand several metres tall. After the Xambanga on the night of the 23rd, the giants and giantesses return to Sant Jaume to celebrate one of the most recognisable events in Barcelona’s popular culture.
About this event
The day begins with the traditional plantada, when the figures gather in the square before setting off. Giants, giantesses, gegantons and gegantones come together in a unique gathering of characters from different festive traditions.
Then it’s time for the dances. Each figure performs its own choreography and shows a distinct personality through movement, accompanied by the music of the celebration.
The plantada and the display are part of the Mañana Gigante, a celebration where these enormous figures stop being objects to look at and return to what they were created for: to go out into the street and dance among the people.
