Dance of the Historical Giants of Santa Maria del Mar
This Saturday, tradition and history come to life in the Dance of the Historical Giants of Santa Maria del Mar, a cultural event celebrating 600 years since the first mention of a giant at the basilica. This emblematic gathering brings together the region’s most notable giants, including those of the City, Tarragona, Vilanova i la Geltrú, and Reus, as well as the city’s Àliga and the Cavallets Cotoners.
About this event
The event will begin at 17:00 in Plaça de Santa Maria, directly in front of the basilica, where the giants will be on display for attendees’ enjoyment. At 17:45, the street procession will set off from the old Mayordomía de Santa Maria del Mar, leading the Àliga and the Cavallets Cotoners in search of the Giants of Santa Maria del Mar. This picturesque route, which promises to be a visual spectacle, will culminate in Plaça de Santa Maria with a display at 18:30.
The event’s climax will come at 19:15 with a festive walk through the historic La Ribera district, winding through its most emblematic streets before returning to Plaça de Santa Maria. The day will conclude with a solemn dance inside the basilica at 20:15, a magical moment in which the giants dance in honour of this centuries-old tradition.
