The ocean that separates the islands of Oceania also unites them. It is a territory of water and memory where every wave has been a route for communication, trade and art. The exhibition «Voces del Pacífico. Innovación y tradición» invites visitors to enter that universe, where the sea is at once border and pathway, inspiration and sustenance.
About this event
Bringing together more than two hundred pieces from the British Museum collections, the exhibition reveals the extraordinary creative diversity of Oceanic peoples over time. Ceremonial paddles carved with millimetre precision, basalt ancestor figures, mulberry-bark garments, hats, necklaces, models of war canoes and mother-of-pearl fishhooks form a visual narrative in which the ancestral and the contemporary engage in uninterrupted dialogue.
Structured around seven areas — innovation and tradition, innovators, weavers, dancers, warriors, carvers and travellers — the exhibition shows how Pacific art reinvents itself without losing its roots. Each object is a voice that speaks of identity, adaptation and beauty, of a creativity that is not halted by distance or time.
In «Voces del Pacífico», Oceanic cultures are presented as what they have always been: beacons in the middle of the sea, guiding through their art the memory and future of a world made of water and spirit.
