Exhibition «Sant Pere de Rodes and the Maestro de Cabestany: the construction of a myth»

The exhibition focuses on the figure of the Maestro de Cabestany, one of the most distinctive names in Romanesque art, and on his most emblematic work: the vanished portal of the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes.

From that void — what is no longer there — the exhibition reconstructs a narrative in which splendour and ruin coexist. The visitor moves among Romanesque pieces, sarcophagi of Roman tradition, reused fragments and documents explaining how the ensemble was dismantled, dispersed and, over time, reinterpreted.

With nearly a hundred works from national and international collections, such as the Museo Frederic Marès, the British Museum and the Musei Vaticani, the tour traces connections between periods, styles and narratives. It is not only about contemplating objects, but about understanding how heritage memory is constructed.

Among remains, traces and testimonies, the exhibition poses a fundamental question: what remains of a work when it disappears, and how that void can end up generating a myth.
