The exhibition «Recovered from the enemy». Francoist deposits at MNAC invites us to look directly at an uncomfortable part of the museum’s history. Far from being limited to the strictly artistic sphere, the exhibition enters into a necessary reflection on memory, responsibility and transparency in the management of heritage.
About this event
After the Republican defeat, the deposits that the Generalitat had organised to protect works threatened by the war fell into the hands of the new regime. The newly created Servicio de Defensa del Patrimonio Nacional (SDPAN) took control of them and used the museum as a centre for receiving, safeguarding and administering those assets.
As a result of that process, the National Museum today holds a group of works linked to those actions. The exhibition brings together 146 works registered as SDPAN deposits, a heterogeneous collection that accounts for diverse origins and complex trajectories.
The inscription «Recovered from the enemy», still visible on some stretchers, encapsulates the political meaning of that operation: the imposition of a new order in the cultural sphere as well. The exhibition proposes rereading these labels not as a mere administrative annotation, but as a material trace of a historical moment that still challenges us.
