Exhibition “[REC]ords. Life through Home Cinema”
Since the first lightweight camera entered a home, home cinema became a way of preserving what seemed too fragile to survive: a birthday, an outing, an awkward gesture, a baby discovering the world. The exhibition “[REC]ords. Life through Home Cinema” starts from this intimate impulse to show how, generation after generation, we have transformed the recording of everyday life into a collective record of enormous cultural value.
About this event
The works brought together recover unpublished accounts and films, many of them marginal or counter-hegemonic, documenting customs, family realities and ways of living that have rarely had a place in official history. They are not “great scenes”, but small moments which, seen from today, reveal what public discourse usually ignores: how one loves, works, celebrates, grows old or resists.
The exhibition invites us to reflect on the relationship between image, memory and truth, questioning the naïve idea that the camera captures reality without filters. What do we choose to film and what do we leave outside the frame? What do we seek to remember when we press the button? What future do we imagine when we record someone who does not yet know who they will be?
The exhibition also offers a look at technological evolution: from 8 mm film cameras and magnetic tapes to mobile phones, which have turned the capture and dissemination of images into an everyday gesture. What was once a family ritual is now a compulsive habit, with new social and emotional implications.
“[REC]ords” does not merely exhibit archives: it proposes understanding them as a mirror. An imperfect, domestic and deeply human archive, where the lives we wanted to preserve so that they would not be lost in the noise still resonate.
