Exhibition “Montserrat, Mother and Land”
The exhibition Montserrat, Mother and Land offers a unique journey through the phenomenon of devotional collecting, taking as its central theme the image of the Virgin of Montserrat, the monastery and the mountain as cultural, spiritual and artistic symbols. The exhibition brings together around forty works from different periods, mostly from the museum's collection, alongside a selection of pieces loaned by other institutions and private collectors.
About this event
The project is structured around the Montserrat-related objects collected by Frederic Marès, a collection that makes it possible to observe how devotion takes material form in very diverse ways: sculptures, engravings, prints, relics and popular objects that have accompanied the faith of generations. Beyond their religious value, these pieces reveal a social and aesthetic dimension that connects the intimate with the collective.
The exhibition narrative pays particular attention to the iconographic evolution of the Virgin of Montserrat and to the dissemination of her image through the world of printmaking, highlighting some of the most exceptional works in the collection. The tour culminates in a look at contemporary creation, where Montserrat imagery reappears reinterpreted through current artistic languages.
Montserrat, Mother and Land is not only an exhibition about faith or heritage, but also about memory, identity and the human need to preserve that which gives meaning to the sacred. A dialogue between past and present built through objects laden with history and meaning.
