Exhibition “Miradas de Gigante”
The Miradas de Gigante exhibition invites visitors to discover the history of Barcelona from an unusual perspective: that of Roc and Laieta, the giants of plaça Nova, which for more than a century have accompanied life in the Cathedral neighbourhood. The exhibition commemorates the 110 years of these emblematic figures, considered the oldest active giants in the city belonging to a neighbourhood association.
About this event
Through photographs, documents, original pieces and testimonies, the exhibition traces the evolution of the neighbourhood from 1905 to the present day. Along this journey, the major urban transformations, social changes and everyday life of several generations emerge, always with the giants as silent witnesses to history.
More than an exhibition about popular culture, Miradas de Gigante speaks of identity and collective memory. It explains how traditions such as the giants have helped keep the sense of belonging alive even in times of profound transformation, when the neighbourhood changed its appearance and many of its residents had to leave.
Roc and Laieta are much more than two festive figures. They represent a community’s ability to preserve its roots, pass on its customs and strengthen ties between generations. An invitation to look at Barcelona from the symbolic height of two giants that have been walking alongside the city for more than a century.
