Exhibition «Miró and the United States»

Through more than 130 works from European and American collections, the exhibition reveals how Miró’s relationship with creators such as Louise Bourgeois, Helen Frankenthaler, Lee Krasner, Arshile Gorky, Alice Trumbull Mason, Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko transformed not only his own language, but the course of modern art.

The tour offers a renewed reading of Miró’s role, shifting the usual focus from France to the United States, a country that profoundly influenced his artistic evolution. From his first friendships in the 1920s to his seven trips to America between 1947 and 1968, his dialogue with the New York scene was constant and fruitful.

At the heart of the exhibition are the 1941 and 1959 retrospectives in New York, decisive moments that consolidated his international standing. The exhibition also recovers the relevance of numerous women artists who took part in that creative exchange and helped redefine abstraction, gestural painting and action painting.

Miró and the United States is a co-production with The Phillips Collection in Washington, where it can also be seen from 21 March to 5 July 2026. A unique opportunity to rediscover Miró as the protagonist of a transatlantic dialogue that remains alive in contemporary art.
