Exhibition “The Nabis: from Bonnard to Vuillard”
Between 1888 and 1900, a group of young French artists decided to look at painting from another perspective. They called themselves the Nabis, a word of Hebrew origin meaning “prophets”. They did not intend to predict the future, but they did imagine a new way of understanding art. The exhibition “The Nabis: from Bonnard to Vuillard” presents in Barcelona the first exhibition devoted entirely to this movement.
About this event
Far from the illusion of realism that had dominated the 19th century, the Nabis argued that a painting should above all be an organised surface of colours and forms. Artists such as Pierre Bonnard and Édouard Vuillard explored domestic interiors, intimate scenes and compositions in which painting enters into dialogue with the world of objects, fabrics and wallpaper.
The exhibition brings together a selection of works that makes it possible to follow the evolution of this group and understand its role at a moment of transition: the passage from Impressionism to the early avant-gardes of the 20th century. Rather than representing reality, the Nabis sought to transform it into a visual experience close to everyday life.
Throughout the itinerary, a key transformation can be perceived: painting ceases to be separate from its surroundings and begins to integrate into them, anticipating a different way of understanding modernity.
