Exhibition «Darwin Botánico»
The exhibition «Darwin Botánico» invites visitors to rediscover Charles Darwin from a lesser-known perspective: his deep relationship with the plant world. Although his name is usually associated with the study of animals and the theory of natural selection, the English scientist found in plants a privileged laboratory for understanding how evolution works.
About this event
Of the fifteen books he published, six were devoted to botanical research. Darwin closely observed orchids, carnivorous plants, primroses, climbers and loosestrifes, convinced that their adaptation strategies offered essential clues about the transformation of species.
The exhibition recreates that experimental universe through a hundred living plants of the same species with which he worked. Illustrations, models and scent devices accompany a chronological tour that makes it possible to follow the discoveries that would end up changing forever the way nature is understood.
Curated by Martí Domínguez Romero, the exhibition also reveals a more intimate Darwin: the researcher who experimented in the garden and greenhouse at Down House with the help of his family. «Darwin Botánico», produced by the Museo de Ciencias Naturales de Barcelona, is also the first exhibition installed in the Invernadero del Parque de la Ciutadella, recently incorporated into the museum's group of spaces.
