Exhibition “Coco Fusco. He aprendido a nadar en seco”
In He aprendido a nadar en seco, Coco Fusco turns suffocation into art and silence into a cry. Inspired by Virgilio Piñera’s short short story, the exhibition is not simply contemplated: it is traversed. It is a journey through territories where words have been punished, dissent erased and art reduced to an echo… until someone, like Fusco, decides to speak from the cracks.

The exhibition charts a map of voices that power sought to tame: imprisoned poets, censored artists, surveilled bodies. From Piñera’s verses to the performances of Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara or the banned songs of Maykel Osorbo, each work reveals a different way of swimming against the current, of inventing oxygen amid control and suspicion.
But He aprendido a nadar en seco does not remain in Cuba. Fusco shifts the focus to the United States, where she dissects the other face of power: cultural institutions, exoticism as spectacle, the illusion of diversity. With irony and clarity, she recovers fragments of her celebrated The Couple in the Cage to place the viewer before their own reflection: to what extent do we continue to observe the “other” behind the bars of the museum?
Between video, archive and performance, the exhibition functions as a poetic trench. Fusco does not seek reconciliation, but awareness. She does not invite us to look, but to think. He aprendido a nadar en seco is, ultimately, a lesson in resistance: learning to breathe where air—and freedom—are scarce.
