“Chez Matisse. El legado de una nueva pintura” offers a route that does not merely follow one artist’s career, but explores how his work opened a fissure in the way painting was understood. Through an outstanding selection of pieces — mostly from Centre Pompidou — the exhibition places Henri Matisse in dialogue with creators who took up, reinterpreted or challenged his legacy.
About this event
The core of the exhibition revolves around his relationship with colour. For Matisse, it was not a decorative resource but an autonomous language able to construct space, emotion and rhythm. That conception transformed the painting into an active surface, freed from the need to represent reality faithfully.
The route, organised into eight sections, traces connections from the German Fauves and Russian Neo-Primitivists to mid-20th-century American painting. In each, one can see how his influence shifts, adapts and continues to generate new readings.
More than a retrospective, the exhibition proposes understanding Matisse as a starting point: someone who did not merely paint, but changed the rules of the game.
