Barcelona Municipal Archive opens its doors to collective memory with the exhibition «Barcelona: el Archivo que somos». An exhibition reminding us that archives are not merely repositories of old documents, but living spaces reflecting the shared history of a city and its inhabitants.
About this event
The title underscores this idea: throughout their life, every person generates documentary traces that become part of the common legacy. The Archive thus becomes a mirror of citizenship, a nearby place that defines us and connects us with those who came before us.
The exhibition highlights the power of original documents, with close to one hundred pieces—among manuscripts, facsimiles and reproductions—selected from more than 50 linear kilometres of holdings that the Archive has safeguarded since the thirteenth century. Every piece opens a window onto decisive moments in the city, from institutional decisions to everyday stories.
As an exceptional piece, and until 25 September, El libro verde de Barcelona can be seen for the first time, one of the city’s most important volumes of privileges, dated to the fourteenth century and preserved at the Historical Archive.
«Barcelona: el Archivo que somos» invites visitors to feel part of a shared memory, reminding us that the past is not shut away on shelves: it remains alive in the documents that tell us who we are.
