Exhibition «Barcelona: city and theatre»
In Barcelona, theatres have not only occupied buildings: they have also helped to draw the city. «Barcelona: city and theatre» reconstructs that relationship by following two stories that advance together, that of the performing arts and that of a city in constant transformation.
About this event
The journey begins on La Rambla, continues along Passeig de Gràcia and Paral·lel, and reaches the former villages of the plain. Through these territories, the exhibition shows how the appearance, disappearance and relocation of theatres accompanied Barcelona’s urban and social changes.
The perspective gradually moves closer: first it observes theatre as a piece of the city, then it analyses the architecture of the venues and finally enters the stage space itself. Maps, plans, drawings, paintings, photographs, models, posters, costume designs and clothing make it possible to follow this journey from different perspectives.
One section recovers Barcelona’s vanished theatres through an audiovisual piece that contrasts historical images with the current appearance of the places where they stood.
Curated by Antoni Ramon Graells, Ivan Alcázar Serrat and Joan Álvarez García-Luján, the exhibition is part of the World Capital of Architecture programme and offers a two-way reading: how much theatre there is in Barcelona, and how much Barcelona has ended up taking to the stage.
