Self-guided visits to La Modelo
Both guided visits and self-guided routes through the building allow anyone who wishes to investigate the history of this prison.

La Modelo will open its doors again so that anyone who wants to can discover what life was like in the facilities. The prison was inaugurated around the 1900s, and it was only a few years ago that its original functions ceased. There are no criminals held there now, but its walls retain the memory of many who terrorised the city in their time.
The complex offers both self-guided and guided visits. With the former, you are given two to three hours inside to explore at your leisure. The guided visits consist of an hour-long tour of the prison, with varied stories of inmates and guards that will leave you astonished. Afterwards you can continue on your own until the self-guided visiting hours end.
La Modelo also stands out for its architecture, closely tied to the fashions of its time and available to enjoy without exception. Access to the galleries and cells is complete. You can even visit the surveillance room, or one of them. It had a panopticon layout, making it much easier to keep control over the prisoners. You do not need to book these visits, so set aside some time and discover the fascinating stories of La Modelo.
