Guided visits to the air-raid shelter in the plaça del Diamant

Refugi 232, located in the plaça del Diamant, is one of the almost 1,400 air-raid shelters built in Barcelona during the Spanish Civil War. This space, managed by the Taller de Historia de Gràcia, offers a guided visit with specialist staff.

Visitors have the opportunity to delve into the historical context of the bombings suffered by the city between 1936 and 1939. During the visit, the passive-defence strategies adopted by the civilian population are explained, and the shelter’s underground galleries are explored, a living testimony to citizens’ resistance against air raids.

The one-hour visit makes it possible to understand the impact of indiscriminate bombings on the civilian population, a military practice that intensified during the Civil War. It is also offered in several languages (Catalan, Spanish and English) according to the group’s needs. Refugi 232 is an ideal place to understand Barcelona’s history and its capacity for resilience in times of conflict.
