The family workshop El Born. The City of Chocolate proposes a surprising journey to the heart of Barcelona in 1700, when chocolate was not merely a pleasure, but a key element of social life. For two hours, families with children aged 6 to 12 discover how this product from America transformed the customs, tables and conversations of a city that was beginning to establish itself as an important centre of its consumption.
About this event
The activity begins with a very chocolatey visit to the archaeological site and the permanent exhibition at El Born CCM. There, guided by stories and objects from the period, participants approach a past in which chocolate was drunk, given as a gift, used in celebrations and part of everyday rituals that would surprise us today. How was it prepared? Who consumed it? Why was it so highly valued? The answers appear among the remains of old houses, utensils and stories that bring the 18th century back to life.
After the historical tour comes the sweetest moment: a final workshop in which adults and children get to work experimenting with chocolate and understanding, through taste and touch, why this product fascinated whole generations.
The City of Chocolate turns archaeology into a sensory experience and history into a shared sweet discovery. A delicious way to get to know Barcelona through one of its most deeply rooted flavours.
