Show “La Nit de Sant Joan”

On a night promising enchantment and tradition, Antonio Ruz presents his choreography “La Nit de Sant Joan (Soirées de Barcelone)” in a production that revives Robert Gerhard’s music and Joan Junyer’s aesthetic, a work unseen since 1939 because of the Civil War. Inspired by the exuberant San Juan festival and the ancestral fire celebrations of the Catalan Pyrenees, this piece is a tribute to Spain’s rich cultural tradition and a modern reinterpretation of its deepest-rooted rituals.

The music, composed by Gerhard in the fervour of 20th-century dance and under the influence of Europe’s exotic vision of Spain, fuses Spanish folk melodies with lively rhythms, evoking torch dances and parades of magical figures. Through his choreography, Ruz not only recovers these elements, but incorporates deeply Catalan symbols such as the sardana, castells and bestiary figures, creating a show that is both a celebration of cultural identity and a work of contemporary art.

“La Nit de Sant Joan” is presented as a unique experience where past and present meet in a magical dance that culminates in the dawn of a new union, symbolised in the dancers’ wedding. A San Juan night that, through Ruz’s lens, promises to be unforgettable.
