«La maternitat d’Elna» comes to the stage as a theatrical piece that recovers a true story marked by the horror of exile and human resilience. The show revives the extraordinary work of Elisabeth Eidenbenz, the Swiss nurse who, amid the chaos after the Spanish Civil War, saved the lives of 597 children by creating a refuge where there had only been helplessness.
About this event
The play places the audience in January 1939, when almost half a million people crossed the border into France fleeing the Francoist advance. In concentration camps such as Argelès, inhospitable, improvised and overwhelmed, pregnant women and newborns survived in extreme conditions. Faced with this tragedy, Eidenbenz created La Maternitat d’Elna, a home of light amid mud, misery and cruelty, where life manages to prevail.
Directed by Josep Galindo, the production, based on the book by Asunta Montellà and with dramaturgy by Pablo Ley, combines theatre, music and projections to bring audiences the intimate and collective dimension of this episode. Rosa Galindo performs with delicacy and strength a story connecting historical memory and present emotion, accompanied by the piano of Franco Piccinno and a staging committed to expressive sobriety.
With a running time of 80 minutes and performed in Catalan, the show becomes a necessary tribute to those who, even in the darkest moments, chose to protect life.
