Winner of a Tony Award, the play drags us to a run-down motel in deep America, the perfect setting for humour as sharp as a razor blade. There, Carmichael, a man marked by violence and obsession, has spent twenty-seven years searching for the hand that was torn from him as a child. When a pair of clumsy criminals offer him a preserved hand they swear is his, the situation becomes deliriously complicated. The motel receptionist, a character as naïve as he is unpredictable, completes the explosive cocktail.

McDonagh, a master of contemporary black humour, builds here a plot in which brutality and the absurd mingle with almost poetic precision. La mà is a story about loss, revenge and the desperate need to cling to something —even if it is a lie.

With sharp dialogue and a breakneck pace, this play confirms that, in McDonagh’s theatre, everything that can go wrong… ends up going even worse.
