«Falstaff» show
The Gran Teatre del Liceu brings the season to a close with Falstaff, Giuseppe Verdi’s last opera and one of the great comedies of the operatic repertoire. With stage direction by Laurent Pelly and Josep Pons conducting the orchestra, this production recaptures all the irony, wit and vitality of a work that shows that the Italian composer left the stage in full creative form.

The story follows Sir John Falstaff, an impoverished knight who, convinced that he still possesses irresistible appeal, tries to seduce Alice Ford and Meg Page at the same time to solve his financial problems. However, the two women discover the deception and decide to respond with a plan as ingenious as it is amusing, which will turn the boastful protagonist into the target of a succession of absurd situations.
Premiered in Milan in 1893, when Verdi was nearing eighty, Falstaff was born from the collaboration with librettist Arrigo Boito, inspired by William Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor and Henry IV. The result is a brilliant, agile opera full of humour, where intelligence and music come together to celebrate, with elegance, the contradictions of human nature.
