Drama “El mestre i el mar”

From 9 December this year, the drama “El mestre i el mar” will be staged in the city of Barcelona. The story begins as Júlia, a young woman from Barcelona, arrives at her grandparents’ house in a small village in Burgos. As the echo of the Civil War resonates through the community with the exhumation of a nearby mass grave, Júlia feels drawn to the secrets of the past. One night, she discovers that her grandfather, who has senile dementia, is hiding an old metal box in the courtyard. Intrigued, she opens the box and finds childhood objects and mementoes.

As she explores the contents of the box, Júlia realises that these memories are connected to the story of Antoni Benaiges, a Catalan teacher murdered in 1936, whose legacy lives on in the village. Her grandfather’s intermittent memory and the taboo surrounding the family’s history become obstacles in her search for the truth.

Determined to discover the connections between her grandfather’s past and Benaiges’s tragic fate, Júlia embarks on an emotional journey that will challenge not only her understanding of history but also her relationship with her family and her own identity. Her struggle reveals the importance of remembering and honouring those who were silenced.
