Blackface y otras vergüenzas is a theatrical piece that deliberately makes audiences uncomfortable and opens up necessary questions. Silvia Albert Sopale writes and performs this work, which examines, through an anti-racist and feminist lens, the way Spanish culture has constructed and repeated stereotypes about the Afro-descendant community.
About this event
Far from placing the problem in a distant past, the show traces the origins of blackface from the Teatro del Siglo de Oro to practices and celebrations that are still considered normal today. Through humour, irony and personal storytelling, Albert Sopale dismantles the so-called «official history» and focuses on that which for centuries has been whitewashed, minimised or turned into folklore.
The work unfolds through different characters and situations that allow us to glimpse long-silenced emotions: anger, sadness, exhaustion and also resistance. Blackface y otras vergüenzas does not seek to lecture, but to prompt active listening and question the collective imagination that continues to uphold these symbolic forms of violence. A brave, direct and deeply contemporary stage work.
