Ballet “The Nutcracker”
The Nutcracker returns to the Gran Teatre del Liceu with a version that retains Tchaikovsky's music but changes the perspective from which the celebrated tale is viewed. Badisches Staatsballett Karlsruhe presents The Girl and The Nutcracker, choreographed by Bridget Breiner.
About this event
The story moves to the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. The Stahlbaum family has lost its fortune, and Clara Marie receives a single inheritance from her eccentric godfather Drosselmeyer: the Nutcracker doll. From there begins a story in which fantasy coexists with family and social tensions, giving the classic a more intimate dimension.
Breiner constructs the work from the vocabulary of classical ballet, with pas de deux, jumps, turns and lifts that accompany the protagonist's emotional changes. The scenery and costumes complete this reinterpretation with a period aesthetic.
The performance will feature a live orchestra, which will revive a score premiered in 1892 and such well-known musical scenes as the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Waltz of the Flowers.
