Opera ‘Aida’
Aida, by Giuseppe Verdi, returns with a staging that replaces the monumental scale usually associated with the opera with a visual language rich in symbolism. Shirin Neshat directs a production that originated at the Salzburg Festival, connecting the drama to themes such as identity, exile, oppression, and the fragility of power.
About this event
At the centre is Aida, an Ethiopian princess turned slave, secretly in love with Radamés, hero of the Egyptian army. Their relationship is caught between conflicting loyalties and a system where power, religion, and law ultimately override individual choices.
Neshat’s approach gives this conflict a contemporary reading without departing from Verdi’s score. The Orquesta Sinfónica and the Coro del Gran Teatre del Liceu accompany a large cast that includes, among others, Anna Netrebko, Anna Pirozzi, Yusif Eyvazov and Piotr Beczała.
Aida is performed in Italian and lasts approximately 240 minutes.
