Themed series ‘Surf Is Culture’
Surf Is Culture proposes looking at surfing beyond sport and understanding it as a cultural phenomenon that has left its mark on music, film, literature and the way freedom has been imagined since the mid-20th century. From 10 June to 7 July, different Barcelona libraries will host a series of talks that explores the surfing universe from unexpected perspectives.
About this event
The programme ranges from Californian documentaries of the 1950s to the legendary waves that have fuelled legends and obsessions around the world. It also addresses the relationship between surfing and counterculture, graphic design, photography, environmental activism and the music that accompanied entire generations of roads, boards and open horizons.
Through iconic figures such as Duke Kahanamoku, Bethany Hamilton and Eddie Aikau, the series reconstructs a history of adventure, risk and personal quest. And among references to Jack London, the Beach Boys and William Finnegan, one constant idea emerges: surfing as a way of being in the world.
More than talking about waves, Surf Is Culture opens a conversation about the desire to escape, travel and live the present intensely. Even far from the sea, the feeling remains.
