‘Barcelona within modern Europe’ conference series
The conference series seeks to encourage dialogue on the musealisation of new spaces in the Born and the city’s integration into the European context across different eras.
About this event
Across five seminars, experts will explore everything from Barcelona’s influence on the shaping of Europe to its evolution as an industrial and urban centre at the turn of the century. Special importance has been given to the participation of young academics and to the most innovative studies in the field of history and memory.
The programme begins with a session on ‘Mediterranean Geopolitics and Nodes of Historical Change’ on 17 October, covering everything from the Catalan capital’s role in Charles V’s empire to its impact on European conflicts between the 17th and 19th centuries.
On 24 October, the conference will focus on ‘The Trajectory of the Factory City and Barcelona in 1900’, highlighting its consolidation as an industrial city.
On 31 October, ‘Elites and Colonial Trade’ will be discussed, followed by an analysis of ‘The Narrow Limits of the Liberal Revolution’ on 7 November.
Finally, on 14 November, the series will conclude with a session on ‘New Urban Representations’, providing a contemporary view of city planning and image.
Each session will take place from 17:00 to 20:30, and attendance is free, although prior registration is required, promising to enrich understanding of Barcelona within the vast European canvas.
